Footscray Aged Care (FAC) is a private family-owned residential aged care facility providing accommodation for 60 residents (formerly high care) in a home-like environment full of colour and warmth. The nursing home has been renovated throughout and presents as decidedly un-clinical and un-institutional. It is relaxed and spacious with many communal areas where socialisation activities and entertainment take place. The facility is divided into two residential wings (of 30 people each). One wing focuses on Dementia Specific Care the other on Clinical Care. A third wing houses a Day Therapy Centre where Physiotherapy Diversional Therapy and Massage services are provided to local community clients and to residents of the home. Where are we? FAC is only 5km from the CBD and situated in extensive gardens settings with multiple additional courtyards. The bedrooms all open onto brick-paved terraces. One boundary is shared with Footscray North Primary School; another with the Maribyrnong Tennis Club. Highpoint Shopping Centre is a minute away by car; there is a tram (Number 82) along Gordon Street and a bus service (number 223) along Rosamond Road. Footscray train station is nearby as is Footscray Shopping Strip and Fresh Food Market. Western Hospital Footscray is a couple of streets away. What's life like at FAC? Life at FAC revolves around social activities and companionship. Residents only return to their rooms to sleep. All receive the benefits of individualised nursing care and assistance with all aspects of daily living and personal hygiene. Our Activities Program is extensive and varied. Arts and crafts; music; outings; performances; and Pet therapy are all high on the agenda. How is cultural diversity accommodated at FAC? Reflecting our multi-cultural local community FAC boasts residents from many backgrounds - at present 19 cultures are represented. Multi-cultural staff provide extensive language support. Individuality and different cultures are celebrated and enjoyed. At all mealtimes an Eastern and a Western meal option is provided. Our Spiritual Garden reflects the mix of religious backgrounds of our residents and regular spiritual services are conducted by ministers priests and religious personnel who visit the facility. Why is the care so good at FAC? Because FAC retains high staff:resident ratios and employs highly qualified nursing staff. 4-5 Division 1 Registered Nurses are on duty 5 days per week with a Division 1 Nurse in charge 24/7. Our well-educated friendly staff are able to identify and implement the appropriate level of care to meet the individual needs of our residents - with dignity consideration and integrity. Care standards are set high and maintained. Is FAC up to date with care procedures? Definitely! FAC operates an extensive in-house staff education program; and staff regularly participate in industry seminars and conferences. Knowledge gained is integrated into practices and procedures. FAC has strong links to Victoria University (providing nursing degree student placements) as well as the Lawrence Aged Care College Australasia. FAC participates in industry research through such projects as 'Respecting Patient Choices' with Austin Health and Latrobe University. How does FAC fit into its local community? FAC carries out joint activities with many local community organisations: Sunshine and Western Hospitals; Vietnamese Women's Association; Victoria University V4U Program; Sunshine Community Rehabilitation Service; local churches and medical practices.
